Big’s inaugural project in New York City is a hybrid residential building which resembles a conventional Danish residential block combined with a traditional Manhattan skyscraper. From the design perspective, the resolution is as simple as pulling up at the corner from a rectangular plan to form a tower.

The combination between these two typologies permits the building to benefit from both compactness, efficiency of a courtyard and meets demands for density and security. But also it guarantees the airiness and wide views to the Hudson River, as seen from a skyscraper.

From the 12th Avenue, the development reveals it’s intimacy and human scale proportions, by keeping three of the four corners lowered down to nearly street lever and only lifting up the North-east corner up towards its peak, 142 meters. By these means, the courtyard opens towards the Hudson River and, by slightly angling the interior walls, all apartments are benefited from the river views and also allows western sun into the block.

The sloping roof is expressed by a a simple ruled surface perforated by terraces. Every apartment gets a bay window to amplify the benefits of the generous view and balconies, which encourage interaction between residents and passers-by.

Predominantly, the building accommodated inside residential units of different sizes and on the first two levels it offers a commercial program.
